I was told that I was abnormally intelligent all throughout most of my childhood, by my parents, teachers, councilors, pastor, 4-H leaders, etc. Apparently, some IQ test I took when I was in Elementary school put me in some category that required me to attend a “gifted and talented” program and skip a grade before middle school. Being on the nerdy, awkward side (and younger to boot), I was always that picked-on kid that thought “one day, I’ll be better than all of these people. I’m going to be rich and famous all because I’m smart!” I’ll willingly admit that it went to my head back then. I surely looked down on others as “the dumb kids,” despite my excessive ignorance at the time.

Leaving Bumblefuck, NY and coming to a more populated place packed with intelligent people made me realize that I’m much, much more average than I thought. The sort of people that I would tend to group as “the mundanes” were the ones traveling the world, starting entrepreneurial projects or making a name for themselves in the arts. All the while, I was failing classes and struggling to find a direction for my life. It was like cold water to the face for me, in a way; sobering and frustrating, but ultimately a needed wake-up call. Since then, I’ve realized that intelligence alone won’t carry me through this world. Attitude, a certain level of street smarts, and sheer will can do more than any amount of innate intelligence.

Sure, I may be smarter on some scale than most people, but meeting people far more intelligent than I has really forced me to reexamine my place in the world, as well as my goals for the future. The greatest lesson I’ve learned in college, more importantly than any piece of academia, is that it doesn’t matter how smart you are. What you do, how you act, and how you choose to grow as a person is, ultimately, infinitely more valuable than any IQ number that can be applied to you.

No matter how intelligent or special we think we are, it’s always critical to keep in mind that we are all mere humans. Every other person that you see, even if they’re just a passerby on a busy street, is a free-thinking and emotional individual just like you. They may be more or less intelligent than you, but they have their own story to tell and their own path to travel. People are people, judgment based on perceived intelligence only fosters inequality.
